The poultry industry in South Africa is on high alert after an East Rand chicken farm confirmed an outbreak of Avian Influenza.
Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development has called for calm and stressed that the Ekurhuleni farm has since been quarantined.
Despite the move to keep the outbreak contained a number of countries have since banned South African poultry products.
Since the outbreak, over 300 chickens died and this prompted poultry farmers to cull more chickens.
Veterinary authorities are investigating the extent of the outbreak and the nature of the pathogen.
According to Onderstepoort’s Veterinary Research facility, the samples from the Johannesburg farm tested positive for the H5 strain of Avian flu.
This is a developing story and we will update the information accordingly.
