Gauteng Police have confirmed the arrests of 5 men, following the shocking Diepsloot vigilante attacks which claimed the lives of 7 young men on Friday, 01 December.
Seven young men were burnt to death after being suspected of terrorising the community by committing petty crimes, which has left the community reeling in shock and fear.
“On Friday, at approximately 23h00, police received information about two bodies that were lying in the street in Diepsloot extension 13.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found the burnt bodies of two men. Both victims were certified dead on the scene.
A few hours later, information was received about another incident of multiple murders in Diepsloot extension 12. Police proceeded to the scene and found five bodies that were also burnt to death.”
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said teams worked tirelessly, following up on all information received, and on Monday, 04 December one suspect was arrested after being identified by an eye witness.
This led to the arrests of 4 more men who will all appear at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 06 December.
All five suspects are between the ages of 30 and 38-years old, and will face murder charges.
Police expect more arrests to be made as the investigation continues.
A team of detectives, led by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the cases of murder.
The community of Diepsloot is reminded that vigilantism, the act of taking the law into their own hands by assaulting and burning those they believe are criminals, constitutes a criminal offence.
Any member of the community that will be found to have participated in the act will be arrested, charged with murder and face the full might of the law.
This isn’t the first mob justice incident in Diepsloot, as last year a Zimbabwean national was also killed by angry community members who accused him of criminal activity.
The group stormed Elvis Nyathi’s home in the middle of the night and stoned him before setting him alight.
