Seven young men were torched to death in the latest Diepsloot vigilantism attack, which has left the community reeling in shock and fear.
Two separate attacks by angry mobs claimed the lives of first five, then two other men who were suspected of terrorising the community by committing petty crimes.
On Friday night, 01 December the mob cornered the 7 young men, some as young as 16 to 21-years, and burnt them alive.
A pile of bodies that were burnt beyond recognition was discovered early on Saturday morning, 02 December, in Extension 12, while two bodies were found in Extension 13.
Only one body, that of 21 year old Katlego Mphuthi, was not burnt beyond recognition.
Identifying the youngster, his family expressed their shock and sadness at his violent death, saying it was wrong because the boys were not caught stealing anything.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela has condemned the vigilante incident in Diepsloot and says police are working around the clock to apprehend those involved.
This isn’t the first mob justice incident in Diepsloot, as last year a Zimbabwean national was also killed by angry community members who accused him of criminal activity.
The group stormed Elvis Nyathi’s home in the middle of the night and stoned him before setting him alight.
