The Senzo Meyiwa trial is the gift that keeps on giving, drama that is after a scuffle broke out on Monday, 27 November between wardens and some of the murder accused in court.
Sizwe Dhlomo recounted the numerous incidents in the Meywia murder trial where drama took away from the long-drawn out murder case.
From previous defense attorney Advocate Malesela Teffo’s arrest in court, the mistrial, a trial within a trial, removal of a judge, the trial beginning de novo, to yesterday’s fiasco, there’s never a dull day in the Pretoria High Court.
When the cameras were off and proceedings adjourned for tea, a physical scuffle broke out between wardens and a few of the men accused of murdering the former Orlando Pirates footballer.
The accused No.3, 4 and 5 told the court that a prison official didn’t take kindly to their usual stretch during the adjournment.
One of men accused said the official wanted them to stay seated as they are during the court proceedings, as if the court is still in process.
In his recount of the matter, the accused said he was threatened by the prison official that if he did not sit down, he would be beaten.
The matter escalated when the accused contested and said they were entitled to stretch their legs as court is adjourned and they had been seated for over 2-hours.
During the scuffle, Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng was not present but when the trial reconvened, State Advocate George Baloyi updated him on what transpired.
Judge Mokgoatlheng admonished the men for their behaviour, and spoke about lessons in ubuntu.
The Department of Correctional Services has condemned the scuffle that broke out in the courtroom.
“The department is looking into the incident. Correctional officials rendering escort and guarding responsibilities do so on behalf of the state, hence any form of unbecoming behaviour warrants a security review to ensure the safety of those in closer proximity to the inmates.”
