Department of Tourism inks collaborative deal with Google SA.
Patricia de Lille, the minister of tourism, has inked a deal with Google, the world’s largest technology company, to promote South Africa as a top travel destination and to help and train the industry in digital skills.
The deal was signed in Cape Town on Monday by the Minister and Dr. Alistair Mokoena, Director for Google South Africa.
In a statement released by the Department, it said, this collaboration is consistent with de Lille’s goal of developing tourism to its maximum potential, utilizing technology to its fullest capacity, and boosting visitor numbers to South Africa in order to boost job creation and economic expansion.
“In an era of digital transformation, collaboration between technology giants and government entities has the potential to reshape industries and enhance public services. As stated in the Tourism Sector Green Paper, there is a ‘lack of support mechanisms for the (tourism) sector, particularly SMMEs, to adapt to a digital future and other technological advancements.
“This visionary partnership between Google and the Ministry of Tourism, focuses on non-monetary exchanges to leverage each parties’ strengths for mutual benefits,”
