Five suspects were arrested for attacking an SAPS officer in North West.
Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the North West Provincial Commissioner, has applauded the apprehension of five individuals suspected of assaulting police personnel.
According to a statement released by the SAPS, the incident happened on Thursday in Freedom Park, which is outside of Rustenburg, close to Phokeng.
Two investigators from the Phokeng police station were reportedly officially assigned to Freedom Park, where they were carrying out investigations. The two were rescued by members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Public Order Police (POP), although they were seriously hurt.
The suspects, who ranged in age from 24 to 51, were taken into custody on charges of robbery, assaulting police, helping another suspect flee, and purposeful property damage. The accused appeared before the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane on Monday.
Following the suspect’s purported whistle blow, the locals gathered at his residence, shut the gate, bound the police officers with ropes, and attacked them with knobkerries.
In addition, the police officers’ telephones were taken, and the State vehicle sustained damage.
