A listener and his girlfriend are planning to move in together. While sorting out their finances, the listener discovered that his girlfriend bought a phone for her ex’s mom. Now, before making the big decision to move in together, the listener wants to know if this could potentially cause problems for them down the road.
“My girl and I have been together for a year now and are looking at moving in together. While busy sorting out our joint finances, I noticed a monthly debit for a cell phone contract. As far as I know, she gets a cellphone allowance from work, and as far as I know, it is deducted immediately. It turns out she is paying for her ex-boyfriend’s mom’s phone, with whom she had a very close relationship.
“They broke up shortly after COVID, and he got retrenched, and they haven’t been in contact as far as they know. I’m confused as to why she is helping out if the relationship is over. I was also helping my ex out with her medical aid, and as soon as we broke up, I stopped. I haven’t confronted her about this, but I just wanted to find out how best I can approach this without causing any fights.”
