Zakes Bantwini has made history as the first African artist to headline the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday, 28 October, but wishes his mom was there to see it.
The Grammy-award winning artist’s music event, Abantu, as well as a number of South African artists including, Goldfish, Nomcebo Zikode, Jeremy Loops, Musa Keys, Mi Casa, YoungstaCPT, Sun-El Musician, GoodLuck, and Ami Faku.
Zakes describes Abantu as a movement that South Africa needs. A music event for the people by the people.
Holding the musical feat at the DHL stadium was poignant for Zakes Bantwini who says South Africans usually flock to the stadium to see international acts.
The Osama hitmaker who has an album dropping in December, shared an emotional post on the day of his event, wishing his late mom could have been there to witness his achievement.
“Imikhuleko Yakho, Ifezekile…
Thank You Ma’Zikode, I’m truly out of words and beyond grateful…
I’m extremely emotional,
my only wish was that my mother was here to witness this, I’m so thankful for this life…
I love you all more than I can express.”
Zakes who also lost his dad in January this year, shared a post of him visiting his mom’s grave with his Grammy award in August.
His mom was laid to rest on 10 May 2007, and it would have meant everything to the artist and producer to have her present at the height of his musical success.
