120 children between ages 8 and 15 hospitalised with suspected food poisoning in the Eastern Cape.
One of the 120 students from the two schools who needed to be taken to nearby clinics was in critical condition, according to the Eastern Cape Health Department.
According to IOL Mlungisi school called the EMS, reporting that 34 students, ages 8 to 15, had been sent to the hospital due to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Additional cases were documented from a different school in the Komani area when students supposedly had a foodborne illness.
According to the department, the event happened on Thursday, and more than fifty of the students are being treated at various hospitals.
“Clinical investigations are being conducted from both the district municipality, and Chris Hani District Municipality, are working on the case. We can confirm that a 14-year-old girl is in a rather critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She remains there now in a stable condition.” said Sizwe Kupelo, the spokesperson for Eastern Cape Health
Kupelo also added the public needs to always take extra precautions around food handling and ensure that they look at expiry dates to ensure that they consume safe food.
In a similar incident, it is reported that in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga 20 learners have been hospitalised after allegedly eating biscuits from a local store.
