NFVF announces ‘Music is My Life: The Story of Joseph Shabalala’ as SA’s Oscar entry
The documentary “Music is My Life: The Story of Joseph Shabalala” has been chosen by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) to be South Africs’s official entry in the International Feature Film category of the 96th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars).
“Music is My Life,” which was filmed over a five-year period, is the story of the late Joseph Shabalala, who gained worldwide recognition with his band Ladysmith Black Mambazo after playing a part in Paul Simon’s enormously popular Graceland album.
Mpumi Supa Mbele is the director of the two-hour documentary special, Music is My Life: The Story of Joseph Shabalala.
After the scores were totaled and examined by the auditors, the entries “Music is My Life – Joseph Shabalala” and “Ladysmith Black Mambazo” were declared the official selections due to their overwhelming popularity.

The Oscar official nomination announcement will be made on the 23rd of January 2024.
NFVF announced their selection on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday.
