The cheques are checking for popular South African artist Busiswa Gqulu who recently recounted how working with Beyoncé changed her life.
The Mthatha-born “Gqom-Queen” said she was shocked when she discovered that Beyoncé had included their 2019 collaboration, My Power in her Renaissance Tour.
My Power was released in 2019 and was part of the Lion King movie soundtrack.
Black Is King is a 2020 American musical film co-written, executive produced, and directed by Beyoncé. It is a visual companion to the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift, curated by Beyoncé for the film The Lion King.
The song went on to become one of the Renaissance Tour’s most trending video clips, as the dances featured Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy.
Speaking to Dineo Lusenga on The Orbit, Busiswa shared how she landed the life-changing project.
“I was in studio with Ghanaian producers, and one of the guys took a video to share to Instagram. Little did I know he was already on the project.
So, one of the people on the project saw his video and said, ‘we’ve been trying to get a hold of this girl’, so he looks at me and says, ‘Busiswa, do you know about this Lion King project that Beyoncé is doing? Are you interested in being on it?’
I was like, yes, put me now!
We literally got the NDA that night and I recorded 8 verses that night in Johannesburg.”
Busiswa on working with Beyoncé
Not only was Busiswa flown to LA first class to shoot the music video for the track, but she recounted how she cried when she realized that Beyoncé was in the same room as her, directing her.
“It was like she was walking up to me in slow motion and I just started crying because I couldn’t believe it was her. My legs just gave way underneath me, and I sat on t Beyoncéhe floor crying.
I eventually managed to say to her, I’m so happy to meet you, and she looks at me and says, ‘You. You’re a beast!’
One rumour I can dispell, don’t worry about the money baby, the cheques are checking.”
Busiswa shared that she gets paid every time Beyoncé performs the song, even if she’s not on stage to perform her verse.
