Matthew Lani in hot water as Wits, and Dept of Health issue statements about “fake doctor”

Matthew Lani, a TikTok user who claims he became a medical doctor at the age of 22, has found himself in hot water, after Wits and the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health released statements against his “bogus” claims.

Lani who raised eyebrows on the social media platform for dishing out medical advice, states that he graduated from Wits, and was employed at Helen Joseph.

The HIV-positive content creator who always had his stethoscope on hand in his videos addressed the “confusion” about his qualifications on his TikTok account, saying Matthew Lani is just his social media name.

Lani’s claims included skipping Grades 4 and 8, and being enrolled at Wits medical school at the age of 16. He also says he does not have a matric qualification.

“I’m making this video because the HPCSA also asked me to clarify this in a video to you guys, Lani is not my legal surname.

That is my social media handle. I don’t use the Lani surname in my IDs. Zingelwa is my legal surname.

So, don’t go to the HPCSA database and put in Lani surname, and when you don’t find results, you get excited.”

However, Wits has distanced itself from Lani’s claims, releasing a statement that no person by the name of Matthew Lani, nor any of his other names can be found on the institute’s database.

Matthew Lani is also facing further action by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health, who shared that a criminal case will be opened against the bogus doctor.

The Department says Lani managed to weave his way into the system, pretending to be employed by Helen Joseph Hospital, where he took his social media medical content.

In addition, the Department says the real Dr Sanele Sobani Vambani Zingelwa will also be opening a case of fraud against Lani at the Tembisa Police Station.

“The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has on Monday, 09 October opened a case of impersonating a medical doctor at the Brixton Police Station following reports of a so-called Dr Matthew Lani, who had assumed various pseudo medical roles, falsely presenting himself as an employee of the department.

Lani managed to weave his way into the system pretending to be in the employ of Helen Joseph Hospital where he moved around the hospital corridors curating content for social media.

Further investigations have revealed that Dr Sanele Zingelwa, the name which Lani claims is his real name, belongs to a second-year medical intern at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital.”

Matthew Lani’s TikTok account has since been deactivated.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose. 

    1.4. “Website” means the website of the KAYA 959 at URL www.kaya959.co.za or such other URL as KAYA 959 may choose from time to time.   

    1. Status and Amendments

    3.2.6. If personal information is released with your consent KAYA 959 will retain a record of the information released, the third party to which it was released, the reason for the release and the date of release, for a period of 1 (one) year from the date on which it was last used.

    3.3. Note that, as permitted by the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002, KAYA 959 may use personal information collected to compile profiles for statistical purposes. No information contained in the profiles or statistics will be able to be linked to any specific user.
