Mthatha-born Themba Mkhangeli has designed the new R2 coin.
Have you seen the latest R2 coin?
Well, it was revealed this week by the South African Reserve Bank this week and has been designed by an artist from Mthatha.
A picture of Themba Mkhangeli holding the R2 coin he created became popular on social media with a flood of congratulatory messages accompanying it.
Mkhangeli has reportedly been working on creating the ideal design for the new currency for three months.
He as made a name for himself as a ballpoint pen artist, and has drawn masterpieces of notable individuals, including the late ProKid, Kid X, Black Coffee, and others.

Who is Themba Mkhangeli?
Themba Mkhangeli is a multi-award-winning visual artist, environmentalist, and entomologist.
He was recently announced as the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition
He was raised in Julukuqu, a small community in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. He is currently based in Nyanga East, Cape Town. His main medium is a ballpoint pen, and the majority of his photographs, particularly portraits, capture the human form.
He began making art at the age of five, but it wasn’t until Grade 6 that he realized he had a talent for it, and he hasn’t looked back since.
