Court orders Nzimande to retract placement of UNISA under administration.
Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande has been barred from placing Unisa under administration by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
Following an urgent application by Unisa’s council, the high court issued its decision on Friday morning. The court ordered Nzimande to retract his notice of intention to place the institution under administration and to pay the application’s expenses.
The court order comes as the minister was set to attend a press conference on Friday morning to announce his final judgment on the destiny of the struggling organization.

According to a draft order dated Friday, 6 October 2023 by Pretoria High Court judge Harshila Kooverjie, Nzimande has been barred from acting on his notice and has been ordered to pay Unisa’s legal fees.
Nzimande’s notice, according to Kooverjie, violated another order granted by Pretoria High Court judge Leicester Adams in August 2023, which barred the minister from acting on Mosia’s recommendations until the proceedings connected to his report were resolved.
