Amapiano producer Mdu aka TRP has been cited as one of the pioneers of the popular genre, particularly the log drum often heard in piano songs. DJ Maphorisa, who has greatly benefited from Amapiano along with other artists, expressed gratitude to Mdu and called on fellow piano artists to donate at least R10k while he and Kabza would donate R100k. Major League DJz also vowed to donate $50,000.

Mdu aka TRP recently joined The Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30 with DJ Keyez for an exclusive sitdown. He told DJ Keyez that everything he’s learned about producing music, fusing sounds, mixing, and gigging came about with time.
“Nah, I’m self-taught, it started when I was just messing around with beats. That’s when things just started falling in place and I don’t know why but I guess people started enjoying the sounds I was putting out.”
Despite his contribution to the Amapiano sound, Mdu doesn’t deem himself the king of Amapiano.
“There’s no such thing as a King of Amapiano, no one can say, Yeah, I own this sound. There are always guys who reinvent the genre and put out amazing work, but no one can call me that. I just do what I do, and I don’t care about what anyone thinks. It’s about what I’m happy to put out,” he said.
For the rising star, the only way he can go is up, and with Amapiano making waves both locally and internationally, the world is his oyster.
“Everyone is vibing to Amapiano; international celebrities, and other artists abroad are playing around with the beats; it’s going crazy on social media with trends; now’s the time to go big or stay home.”
