Crime in Gauteng has increased by 4% between April to 30 June 2023.
Provincial Police Commissioner Elias Mawela presented Gauteng’s crime stats for the first quarter dated 1 April to 30 June 2023 on Tuesday.
According to Mawela, the province’s share of overall crime statistics for the first quarter of 2023/2024 was 27.9% with 4 022 more crimes were reported during the same period in Gauteng in 2022, a 4% rise in crime overall.
In the province between January and March of this year, 153 more individuals were killed than during the same period last year, while 82 sexual offenses were registered, which is 18 more than at the same time last year. There was a total of 27 cash-in-transit robberies in just three months.

Over 9000 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested in Gauteng during the first quarter of 2023.

According to Mawela, crimes are often reported between Thursday and Monday.
“Gauteng has contributed 27.2%. This contribution is slightly reducing, as in 2019 our contribution was 28.2%. Our contribution to the national figure will always remain high. This is taking into consideration the unique characteristics and profile of the province.” said Mawela,
