The first case of a new COVID-19 variant (EG.5 or Eris.) was detected in Gauteng.
The first case of the latest COVID-19 subvariant, Eris, in South Africa has been confirmed by the National Department of Health.
Foster Mohale, a spokesman for national health, claimed that a sample retrieved from a patient in Gauteng contained the new type.

He advised the public not to become alarmed and said the department would release a statement as soon as possible.

The new COVID-19 subvariant was recently announced by the World Health Organization (WHO), which stated that it is expected to result in an increase in infections but not an increase in severity.
The subvariant is known as EG.5, commonly known as Eris, and has been assigned the letter E.
