Crowthorne Christian Academy in Midrand is under the spotlight after a learner was pushed and banned for wearing her natural hair in dreadlocks.
Videos of 12-year old Tylin Gcabashe being told she will not be allowed into the school unless she shaves her hair off, has caused outrage online.
The learner and her mother were both pushed out of one of the school’s offices by the Principal’s husband, who can be seen on video admonishing Tylin and her mother for “their behaviour.”
Tylin’s parents were told their daughter will not return back to the school despite her fees allegedly being paid for, because she broke the school’s code of conduct.
However, her parents argue that the code of conduct does not stipulate anything about dreadlocks, which is natural hair.
Text conversations between Principal Tanya Booysen, and Tylin’s parents from July, show a pattern of disregard and understanding from the school regarding natural hair.
The school’s policy stipulates that no hair extensions would be allowed, and girls should have their hair neatly braided or in a bun.
Crowthorne Christian Academy does, however, say natural hair is allowed.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, 14 August was brought to the attention of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) who protested outside the school on Wednesday, 16 August.
According to The Sowetan Live, the school is operating illegally, and the Gauteng Department of Education is trying to assist the family to find alternative schooling.
Police have also confirmed that a case of common assault has been opened against Booysen’s husband.
