The National Film & Video Foundation (NFVF) And Netflix have signed a partnership to provide 100% funding to 6 micro-budget films to the joint value of R28 million, to boost recovery for South Africa’s creative industry.
The agreement will see both partners contributing R14 million each in support of the production of local films, which will include exclusive debuts on Netflix.
“We thought about what would the best support our film practitioners in the country and this is how this project was born. In that, as an entity, we don’t necessarily fund 100% of the film productions, and so this was an opportunity for us to say how do we alleviate pressure off our filmmakers who still need to go out and raise additional funds from the traditional way in which we fund. So we approached Netflix which was very open to having the discussion with us.”
