Tumelo Madlala, Senzo Meyiwa’s childhood friend, has disputed the statement made by Kelly Khumalo after the footballer’s death.
Kelly who was dating Senzo Meyiwa, at the time of his murder inside her family’s Vosloorus home in 2014, gave police a statement, which Madlala has rubbished.
Madlala who was on the witness stand this week, said Kelly’s version of events, especially her detailing that there was a lot of blood “gushing” from the footballer was “over embellished.”
According to the slain Bafana Bafana captain’s closest friend, there was only a small amount of blood on Senzo’s chest.
This was in contradiction to Kelly’s statement, which defense lawyer Zithulele Nxumalo read to juxtapose Madlala’s testimony.
“The one suspect with the gun was threatening us in the living room, the taller, slimmer one came from the bedroom to the lounge, where his friend was.
I then remembered that my child was in the other bedroom and I opened the door to see what was happening. I then saw my mom struggling with one of the intruders, and Senzo, Mthokozisi, and Tumelo were busy struggling with the gunman.
I tried to help my mother by shoving the taller intruder. I couldn’t see what was happening behind me. I only heard gunshots. Senzo ran towards me, trying to grab me. I grabbed him but I could see that he was weak. He fell into my arms and I spotted blood on his back.
I turned him over and I saw a lot of blood on his chest.”

Apart from details about the amount of blood he remembers seeing on his friend’s chest, Madlala also disputed part of Kelly’s statement, saying Senzo was shot in a scuffle with one of the men.
“I want her to come to court and explain for herself. I don’t remember seeing blood gushing out like she says she saw. I saw spots of blood, not gallons.
I want this statement to be set aside and for the author of the statement to come to court and explain the nonsense that’s written here.”
