Criminal gang claims responsibility for Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio’s assassination.
Presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated at a campaign rally ahead of this month’s election in Ecuador.
The incident happened as he was leaving the event in the nation’s capital, Quito, on Wednesday.
He is one of the few candidates that has suggested a connection between organized crime and Ecuadorian government figures.
New York Post has reported that Los Lobos (The Wolves), a criminal gang, has taken responsibility for his assassination.
With about 8,000 members, Los Lobos is the second-largest gang in Ecuador. Many of its members are imprisoned.

A video of the moments leading up to the assassination is being widely shared on social media.

According to reports, Villavicencio claimed only a few days before that he had been told to wear a bulletproof vest.
“They have told me to wear a (bulletproof) vest but here I am in a sweaty shirt, let the drug lords come, let the hitmen and vaccinators come”, he told the crowd
In response to Villavicencio’s assassination, outgoing Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has proclaimed a 60-day nationwide state of emergency.
