UNISA to be placed under administration for maladministration.
The University of South Africa (Unisa) which is the largest open distance learning institution in Africa has been informed by Higher Education minister Blade Nzimande that the institution will be placed under administration.
In a 308-page report delivered to Nzimande in May, independent assessor Prof Themba Mosia made 26 suggestions, one of which was that the council and management of Unisa be removed of their responsibilities and placed under full administration.
The department said on Monday that the minister had informed James Maboa, the chairperson of the Unisa council, of his plan to appoint an administrator on Friday.

The Higher Education Department explained how the Ministerial Task Team (MTT) conducted an independent review of Unisa’s mission drift, which had massive implications on the financial sustainability and future of Unisa.
“The minister intends to exercise his powers in terms of the Higher Education Act of 1997, which empowers him to appoint an administrator.”
“In terms of section 49B the council of Unisa will be dissolved upon the appointment of an administrator.”
“The minister’s decision follows reports by an independent assessor, Prof Themba Mosia, and the ministerial task team (MTT) on Unisa chaired by Dr Vincent Maphai. Minister Nzimande is satisfied that the independent assessor’s report reveals financial and other maladministration of a serious nature which affects the effective functioning of Unisa.” said the Department.
