Rodgers Monama, Limpopo MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism, announced a new Liquor trading law ‘midnight law’ prohibiting the sale of alcohol after midnight in the province.
The new law is set to come into effect on August 1, 2023. Monama made the announcement during a Nelson Mandela Day address in Modimolle, Limpopo, at the Victim Support Centre on Tuesday.
“It is through this action that the Department will see liquor outlets, which our people usually refer to as nightclubs, taverns, shebeens, liquor restaurants, etc, brought to a standstill by midnight during all operating days,” he said.
The MEC indicated that one of the contributing causes of gender-based violence, child abuse, community instability, trauma incidents, and rape is alcohol.
Listeners shared their thoughts on whether rules of governance should be more stringent when it comes to the kinds of issues caused by alcohol abuse.
