At the age of 54, Arthur Mafokate has made the decision to pass on the leadership of 999 Music to his 29-year-old son, Lesego. Recognizing the need for new energy and ideas, Mafokate believes it is time to entrust the organization to his son to take the reins.
While stepping down from his position as label boss, Arthur highlights that he is not bidding farewell to the music industry entirely. Instead, his focus and interests have shifted towards other endeavours.
“I love music, I haven’t given up on music, but I found other interests to do, which have kept me busy. Now I’ve handed it over to my son, hoping he does it justice. I wish him luck on this journey because it is tough,” he told the publication in part.
The announcement comes after Mafokate’s appointment as chairperson of the Creative Cultural Industry Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA) in June this year.
According to the organization’s website, its role is to lobby and advocate for its member organizations on government policies and legislation.
The CCIFSA also develops standards and industry policies to be adhered to by the member organizations and their leaders and staff, including member organizations of the federation, and creates a self-regulatory body for cultural and creative industries through an Act of Parliament.
In addition, the organization also preserves and documents the cultural and creative professionals’ legacy, while coordinating the industry and protecting the rights and status of industry professionals.
