Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper and Zambian international Kennedy Mweene, 38, officially retires from professional football to explore other avenues in the beautiful game.
“Today, I announce the end of my playing career,” declared Mweene, who thanked everyone who’s been instrumental in his footballing journey.
“My family, my two sisters, my two brothers, friends, coaches, and lastly, soccer fans across the borders, especially the Yellow Nation Your support means a lot to me. We have memories and experiences that we will cherish forever.”
Mweene also thanked his previous clubs, State House FC, Lusaka Celtics FC, Kitwe United, Free State Stars, and Mamelodi Sundowns.
“Football taught me how to be a man on and off the field and to be a better person; it has given me a chance to play against my heroes and share the same changing room with some of the best players both at the national team and at Sundowns,” he added in part.
The 38-year-old revealed that this chapter steers him into a different role and allows him to give back what he has learned and experienced. It is unclear whether Mweene will take on a managerial role at Sundowns or move elsewhere. Sharing the news of his retirement, Mamelodi Sundowns described Mweene as ‘one of the most decorated players in the PSL’s history.’
“Masandawana, Zambia, and Mamelodi Sundowns icon Kennedy Mweene is hanging up his gloves to pursue the next step in his illustrious football career. A Continental Champion for Club and Country and one of the most decorated players in South African football history!”
