Last week, a group of individuals tragically lost their lives when a gas cylinder leaked poisonous fumes into the air, causing fatal consequences. This cylinder was among many commonly utilized for illegal mining processes that have been prevalent in the region.
Upon investigating the aftermath of the gas leak, it has come to light that some residents of the Angelo informal settlement believe the responsible parties for the incident have already fled the area.
However, it is with great concern that Kaya News has received reliable information indicating that illegal mining activities within the settlement have now resumed. It appears that the recent tragedy has not deterred the determined individuals involved in this illicit industry.
This persistence demonstrates the urgency for swift and effective intervention to protect the lives and well-being of the community. However, residents lack confidence in the police’s ability to apprehend the responsible individuals or to put a stop to illegal mining in the area. At the same time, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says it would be difficult to get the army involved – to assist in dealing with illegal mining.
