President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued letters of suspension to Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela and Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) confirmed the President’s suspension of both judges were due to delays in judgements.
“The JSC is in the process of appointing a tribunal for each one of the judges. As of today, being the 28th of June, the President has issued letters of suspension to the judges.
This follows the recommendation by the JSC that the two Gauteng-based judges be suspended pending the outcome of complaints against them for delays in handing down judgements.”
Both Maumela and Mngqibisa-Thusi’s suspensions follows the recommendation made by the JSC in April, pending the outcome of a tribunal investigating delays that their judgements suffered.
Judge Maumela was the presiding judge in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, and earlier this month the murder trial of the footballer was postponed owing to Maumela’s ill health.
The Meyiwa trial which has been dragging on due to a number of postponements was moved to 17 July due to Maumela’s health.
Complaints against both judges were lodged in 2020 by Judge President, Dunstan Mlambo, who said that the judges were delaying judgements which should have taken no more than 6 to 26 months.
