Congratulations to Bafana Bafana legend Shaun Bartlett, who has done the near-impossible by leading Cape Town Spurs to PSL promotion.
The Cape Town-based side was relegated to the National First Division in the 2017–18 season.
When Bartlett took over as coach in October 2021, the team was facing relegation from the first division.
This is not the first side Bartlett led to the topflight. In the 2014/15 season, he guided Golden Arrows to PSL promotion.
Speaking on Wednesday evening after his team’s playoff match against Maritzburg United, Bartlett said that he is taking it all in. “People don’t realize the goodness of God in this team. Everybody else thought it was impossible. Everybody thought it was impossible. Everybody thinks faithfulness in obscurity means public recognition. My players worked hard. I’ve got to thank the management, the technical team, and the players,” he said.
A teary Bartlett also thanked his wife, who has been supportive throughout the season.
“Everyone has done exceptionally well this season. But above all, I like to thank my wife. She has been supportive the whole season. As a coach, you go home and ponder a lot of things. Wanita, thank you for everything,” added the coach.
“You’ve always been there for me and my family, and I think that’s one thing you can count on. Whether it’s win or lose, my family is always there for me, and I really appreciate that.”
Lastly, he thanked his team for showing character.
“As a leader, I don’t always have to coach on the field. They are the guys on the field, Nassir and Michael, Jarryd, and Clayton. These are guys who take ownership of what we want to achieve. Everybody had the warrior spirit that we needed to hear today. I give all the glory to God as far as getting promoted is concerned,” he said.
