Irate residents in several parts of Johannesburg are facing a fourth day without water, after an outage at City Power’s Orlando power station left taps running dry from Thursday 08 June.
While JHB Water says parts of the affected area have been restored, there are several areas that remain dry, as capacity levels at towers and reservoirs fail to recover.
One of the worst affected areas, Bergbron, has been isolated since Friday 02 June, after City Power contractors reportedly hit a sewage pipe while fixing an electric fault.
This resulted in raw sewage leaking into water pipes, with possible contamination in Bergbron in the following streets:
- Bernard Road
- Helderberg Road
- Phillips Avenue
- Schoongezicht Road
- Jonkershoek Road

The affected portion of the water network in Bergbron remains isolated at this time. Teams flushed the network, while samples were taken for laboratory testing.
Lab results have indicated non-compliance according to water quality standards. Further flushing has been delayed as JHB Water systems are impacted by power outage affecting Eikenhof pump station.
“Once water is restored in the area, the network will continue to be flushed, and further samples will be taken for testing. Customers in the affected streets are requested to refrain from utilizing water from the network until further advised.”
JHB Water says alternate water supply is made available through a mobile tanker in the above-mentioned streets.
Meanwhile the Soweto outage from Thursday still sees Linden, Eagles Nest, Honeydew, Crown Gardens, Randpark Ridge and several other areas high and dry.
