A Free State man is facing attempted murder charges after he doused his wife with petrol and set her on fire.
According to Bothshabelo, Free State police, the 38-year old man was in a drunken fury after an argument with his wife on Saturday, 13 May.
While drinking at home, Dikgang Edward Lebetsa first assaulted his 36-year old wife, before rushing outside and returning with a container.
The container filled with petrol was used to douse his wife who was laying on the floor. Lebetsa then set his wife on fire and was arrested.
“On Saturday, 13 May, an argument between the husband and wife over missing money at the house escalated and the 38-year old man assaulted his wife.
The accused allegedly doused his wife with petrol and set her alight at approximately 21h00. The victim managed to extinguish the flames by grabbing a nearby water bucket. However, she could not access medical treatment because her husband locked her in the house.
The victim escaped the following morning and received treatment at a local hospital.”

Lebetsa appeared at the Botshabelo Magistrates Court in the Free State on Tuesday, 16 May, facing attempted murder charges.
The case has been postponed to 25 May and Lebetsa is remanded in custody.
