Mashatile assures Jagersfontein residents that homes will be rebuilt in 6 months.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile is requesting that residents of Jagersfontein in the Free State to have a more paitince as the government fixes what many have describe as a “ghost town”.
A year ago, the Jagersfontein mine’s dam walls fell, destroying the infrastructure and displacing 186 people, while one person was killed, and two remaining unaccounted for.
Mashatile has said that measures to repair Jagersfontein after visiting the area on Tuesday.
“We obviously don’t expect that change will come overnight but we have now started and even with the houses, as you can see the show houses here, they have now started with the project so people should be able to return to their homes properly in the next six months,” Mashatile said.
“We want see economic activity in Jagersfontein”
During his visit to the town Mashatile said that the government wants to see economic stimulation at Jagersfontein.
“We want to see local economy activity. So that we don’t put people inside houses but then there’s no local economic activity to benefit from so he will be driving that.
“The premier has already identified other projects like the solar project and that can provide 6 000 jobs and hemp farming. So, there are a number of initiatives that would come” Mashatile said.
The project for rehabilitation is led by the Jagersfontein Development Project and includes provisions for housing which are intended to be completed within the next six(6) months. pic.twitter.com/ckJxqnYINc
