
Harry Belafonte has passed away at 96.
Harry Belafonte, a pioneering musician and actor who rose to fame as an advocate for civil rights, has passed away at the age of 96.
The renowned actor and stage performer Harry Belafonte passed away on Tuesday morning at his home in New York City from congestive heart failure, according to his longtime publicist Ken Sunshine.
Belafonte was famous for his groundbreaking mainstream success in the 1950s music industry.
He was good friends with Miriam Makeba. Harry Belafonte coached Miriam Makeba’s musical career when she first started out when they met in England.

He assisted her in relocating to the US and encouraged her to sing in a variety of African and Latin American languages.

One of the first to pay tribute to Belafonte was Oprah Winfrey, who described him as “a trailblazer and a hero to us all.”
