
Thapelo Amad has resigned as mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
Al Jama-ah councillor Thapelo Amad, a member of a political party for Muslims, has resigned as mayor of Johannesburg.
The announcement of his resignation was made at a press conference on the eve of council debating a motion of no confidence against him brought by opposition parties.
Amad was in office for 12 weeks, which is less than 100 days.
He was the City of Johannesburg’s seventh mayor in just two years, after taking over from the Democratic Alliance’s Mpho Phalatse.
ActionSA had previously said that it would bring forward a resolution of no confidence against Amad at the upcoming council meeting.

The public has criticized him for mentioning a private company’s R9.5 billion loan to the city. His public speeches have also received a lot of social media mockery.
ANC Gauteng leader Panyaza Lesufi, who heads the coalition ruling the city, announced the announcement of Amad’s departure.
“We met with coalition partners and in the meeting Al Jama ah presented to us the resignation letter of Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad, after lengthy deliberations and consultations the government of local unity accepted the resignation letter.
“We want to reaffirm the government of local unity her in Johannesburg remains intact and will defend motions against the speaker and chief whip.” said Lesufi
