Creating blended families is not only an adjustment, but also very difficult.
Blended families, if you’re not aware, are formed when new couples move in together, bringing in children from previous relationships.
Despite being quite challenging, blending families can also be very rewarding, if done correctly.
On Feel Good with Andy Maqondwana, Andy asks listeners about the transition of creating a blended family.
Below are four tips to make your blended family work:
- RESPECT: You can’t force people to like you, however you can insist and encourage mutual respect.
- CLEARLY DEFINE EXPECTATIONS: Allow each family member to express their needs and expectations.
- DON’T MAKE COMPARISONS: Everyone is unique, therefore understand that comparing family members is not only unfair, but very dangerous too. Appreciate every family members unique strengths.
- MEET KIDS WHERE THEY ARE: Be patient about the relationship you have with your step children. Give them some time to open up to you.
