Body used in Thabo Bester’s prison escape has been identified.
Identification has been made of the burned body discovered in the Mangaung cell which was believed to be Thabo Bester.
The identity of the burned body discovered in Thabo Bester’s cell has been confirmed by DNA tests.
Police confirmed that the burnt body discovered in cell 35 at Mangaung Correctional Centre was identified through DNA testing that matched with the deceased biological mother, according to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, SAPS national spokeswoman.
‘The family has been notified by the investigating officer. No further comment will be provided. As difficult as this news is, the SA Police Service is pleased to bring closure to the family.’ said Mathe

On May 3, 2022, when the body was discovered, authorities first thought it belonged to Bester. DNA testing, however, carried out after Bester’s escape and subsequent capture, has established that the body belongs to Katlego Bereng, 31, and not Bester.
Batho Mpholo, Bereng’s father, claims that his son vanished in April of last year. City Press claims that the 51-year-old received a call confirming the discovery of the body.
‘The call has left me numb and my spirit is lost. I never thought I would lose my firstborn in such a gruesome way. He stayed in Bloemfontein with his grandmother, but he was also renting a room in the township.
He was the person who loved posting on social media, but in around April he became quiet. I tried calling him, but his number was no longer functioning.’
JUST-IN: The family of Katlego Bereng has confirmed that the charred body found in convicted murderer #ThaboBester cell was that of their son.
