Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to John Manyike, Head of Financial Education at Old Mutual about what to do during divorce mediation.

It is always important in marriage to acknowledge that the worst is always around the corner.
Manyike says “Nobody gets into a relationship with the intention of getting a divorce, however at times couple decide, lets call it a day. Legally speaking, divorces get finalized when they go to court, but the process begins when couples decide that the relationship is no longer working.”
Every mediator has their own processes and strategies, its important to kickstart the process by gathering information, identifying issues, negotiating terms, and—hopefully—reaching a settlement.
Manyike gave strategies and useful advice to those going through a divorce mediation, and encouraged a win win mindset.
“If your definition of winning is such that, you can take everything, but you can’t touch 1, 2, and 3, then there is a problem. This means you are not planning on compromising during negotiations.”
