Who is Zakes Mda?
Prof. Zakes Mda who is an accomplished novelist, poet and playwright was born in 1948 in Herschel, South Africa and spent his early childhood in Soweto. A prolific author of works in a variety of genres, Mda is considered one of the foremost writers in post-apartheid South Africa.
His father, A. P. Mda, was a founding member of the African National Congress Youth League, where he worked with Nelson Mandela, before leaving that group to join the more radical liberationist Pan Africanist Congress. His mother, Nompumelelo Rose Mda, was a nurse.
Mda has received numerous accolades and honours both as a playwright and as a novelist. He is considered one of the leading voices in South Africanliterature.
