A woman who defrauded the South African Revenue Service (SARS) of R550 000 has been sentenced to 10-years in prison.
Penelope Hlengiwe Khumalo was convicted on charges of fraud and corruption at the Nelson Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
Khumalo who was an employee of SARS assisted VAT vendors to complete and submit fraudulent returns with the aim to receive undue refunds from SARS.
According to the Nelspruit Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, Khumalo committed the crime in March 2010.
The 46-year old cost SARS R550 000, and was sentenced to 14-years combined imprisonment on four counts of fraud.
She was then sentenced to a further 8-years collective imprisonment on two counts of corruption.
The Hawks says Khumalo will serve an effective 10-years in prison without an option of a fine.
