A KwaZulu-Natal taxi boss was gunned down outside a primary school on Wednesday, 22 February. The incident took place outside the Lotusville Primary School, and a 10-year old was caught in the crossfire.
While the Grade 5 learner is said to be just a little shaken with the stray bullet just knicking him on his arm, the unidentified taxi boss was killed.
According to reports from the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the taxi boss was stationary in a silver Toyota Hilux outside the school.
It is believed the man was waiting to pick up his child from school at approximately 14h23.
RUSA reacted to a number of calls from residents and eyewitnesses about rapid gunfire. Callers notified the private security company that two gunmen were targeting the Hilux.
RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram shared that there were over 30 9mm and high calibre cartridges from two different rifles that were found on the scene.
The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body and was declared dead on scene.
It is unclear if the 10-year old learner was the victim’s child.
“Reaction officers were dispatched and arrived on scene at approximately 14h23. On arrival officers found about 30 9mm and high calibre cartridges from two different rifles located around the deceased’s vehicle.
The silver Hilux was bullet riddled next to the entrance of the school. The deceased did have a 9mm pistol holstered on his waist.”
Eyewitnesses say a silver Mercedes Benz had pulled up before two men got out and began shooting at the taxi boss.
