Competition Commission launches investigation into food prices.
The Competition Commission has started looking into South Africa’s skyrocketing food prices.
The investigation will look into the supply chain for fresh food in South Africa as well as signs of anti-competitive behaviour or price fixing.

Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to Siyabulela Makhunga who is the Competition Commission to shed light on some of the aspects of the investigation.

The Competition Commission said there appears to be broad concern over price levels and volatility of pricing for fresh produce in South Africa.
The studies show that high prices of fresh produce have a disproportionate effect on the poor and low-income earners who have to spend a greater portion of their income to purchase essential products.
“Over and above our investigation during the COVID-19 pandemic, out of 1 254 excessive pricing investigations that we conducted 97% of those were related to basic foods and fresh produce foods, and about 322 of those were related to garlic and ginger. “
