Homeless Pretoria street hustler Alostro claims he inspired the late Vusi Ma R5.
In a video making the rounds on social media, Alostro is heard saying he came up with the name Vusi Ma R5.
“I came up with the name Ma R5. I told him you smoke expensive cigarettes but every day I give you R5. I then told him from that day onwards you are Ma R5. You’ll sing Bacardi,” said Alostro.

Alostro gained popularity in 2020 following his viral interview with SABC news where a news journalist is asking homeless people about how the lockdown has affected him.
Alostro then comes forward and says the actual problem in the streets of Pretoria is “Alostro”, a slang term for Nyaope withdrawal symptoms.
The name Alostro has stuck with him since.
Vusi Ma R5 was laid to rest this past Sunday in Mabopane, Pretoria North. Police are yet to make any arrests in connection with his killing.
