Blade Nzimande announces that NSFAS-funded students will not be paying registration fees.
Dr. Blade Nzimande, minister of higher education and training, has announced that all institutions of higher education would register NSFAS-funded students without charging a registration fee upfront while they wait for their application results.
There have been over 1,1 million applications submitted, 156 000 of which were for SASSA clients who received immediate funding.
Nzimande has indicated that all qualifying and confirmed NSFAS funded students will be permitted to register for the 2023 academic year without paying any fees upfront.

Additionally, he said the financial aid program will reimburse universities up front for expenditures associated with registration, tuition, and living expenses.

Nzimande stated that NSFAS is now finalizing the upfront payment schedule for universities and TVET Colleges, with payments due by the end of the month. Nzimande was speaking at a briefing in Pretoria.
“NSFAS has agreed with all our institutions to allow all the NSFAS confirmed funded students to register for the 2023 academic year.
This arrangement also applies to all students who qualify under historic debt funds.
“What does this mean? All NSFAS stipend so will register without having to pay for anything as we start the 2023 academic year,” says Nzimande.
