Was 2023 hard financially? – A lifestyle downgrade could be a solution in the new year
Downsizing your life is harder than expanding your lifestyle, and many people struggle to pursue it when the time calls for it.
As we gradually increase the number of items and services we use, larger lifestyles tend to creep up on us.
It can be painful when we have to give up some of the things we own in order to remain solvent, in many cases anger and depression may result from it.

Kaya Biz with Guguletthu Mfuphi spoke to Mantsha Pheeha, Author and Certified Coach about some of the reasons why many South Africans have difficulty with downgrading their lifestyles.

“You’ll have to confront your attachment to titles and social standing”
“This all comes from how most of us are brought up, in your upbringing your adults will talk about how you appear in society, vs who you truly are.”
“When you do well in school your parents will largely speak about it, and other adults in the community will also show respect for admiration for a child who is doing well as opposed to those who aren’t.” says Pheeha.
Deal with the “Abantu Bazothini Syndrome”
“The big question you need to ask yourself is how do you define your identity without all these things, and that get very difficult because you find that you are actually a nobody without all these things. You’ve built all these external stuff without doing the real work.” says Pheeha.
“Act as soon as possible”
“Smart people downgrade themselves before institutions downgrade them, while most of us wait for the bank to take something away from us.”
