Health Department warns of highly transmissible XBB.1.5 COVID-19 variant.
A highly contagious Covid omicron strain has been reported for the first time in South Africa.
The Department of Health announced on Saturday that it had been made aware of the novel XBB.1.5 variety and was meeting with scientists to learn more about its severity and potential for transmission.
.@HealthZA has been alerted about this highly transmissable XBB.1.5 variant and is currently in discussions with the scientists to gather more information including its transmissibility and severity. Thus, an official communication will be made in due course. #COVID19

In the meanwhile, the department advises South Africans to get their shots, receive boosters, wear masks, maintain social distances, stay away from crowded areas, and wash their hands frequently.
