Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize is concerned about a possible third wave of COVID-19 infections post-Easter holidays.
The Easter period is a time where most South Africans visit family members and attend mass church gatherings.
The minister says the immediate focus for 2021 should be centered on the vaccination of high-risk groups.
The country continues to roll out its vaccinations, which began in February.
Over 73,000 healthcare workers have now been vaccinated as part of the country’s first phase of inoculations.
Zweli has warned that a rise in cases may be experienced in June as the country enters its full peak of the winter season.
Easing of restrictions
President Cyril Ramaphosa moved South Africa to a level 1 lockdown on Monday.
Restrictions on the sale of alcohol were eased but banned during the country’s new midnight to 4 am curfew.
