eNCA reporter Lindsay Dentlinger apologises after mask controversy

“I totally acknowledge the outrage and I apologise for the disrespect it has caused to people who don’t deserve to be drawn into this.”

eNCA journalist Lindsay Dentlinger is speaking out for the first time after being accused of racism.

Dentlinger became a trending topic for days last week after viral clips showed her asking black politicians to wear masks during her interviews.

But white politicians were not asked to do the same.

Social media users accused her of racism, with celebrities such as Siv Ngesi and Kaya 959’s very own Unathi expressing their disgust.

It was an oversight

Dentlinger said she felt “awful” about how the clips were being perceived.

“I do acknowledge how it is portrayed. I am being portrayed as not speaking to anyone black unless wearing a mask,” she said during an interview on eNCA.

But the reporter said that some of the clips shared in the footage doing the rounds were recorded last year when reporters were not required to ask people to wear masks during interviews.

Dentlinger also explained why FF Plus leader Pieter Groenewald was not wearing a mask during his interview after the budget speech last week, while UDM’s Nqabayomzi Kwankwa was asked to do so.

“People don’t want to hear that it was an oversight for me not to ask [Groenewald] to wear a mask. He was my first interviewee, things are working very differently in this time of COVID-19,” she said.

“Normally, I would have producers with me who would grab our interviewees, would make sure they are prepared for the broadcast. This is not happening during the time of the pandemic. Mr Groenewald didn’t have a mask anywhere on his person before I started interviewing him.”

Dentlinger said she didn’t mean to disrespect anyone and called Kwankwa to apologise.

Social media reaction

Many social media users have slammed Dentlinger’s apology. Some accused her of trying to make excuses instead of simply acknowledging that what happened was wrong.

“You should’ve just kept quiet @metrobabe! You trying to spin this by saying “I’m not even white”! Total mess, disaster!” one Twitter user said.

Some did not believe her response was an apology.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose. 

    1.4. “Website” means the website of the KAYA 959 at URL www.kaya959.co.za or such other URL as KAYA 959 may choose from time to time.   

    1. Status and Amendments

    2.1. KAYA 959 respects your privacy. This privacy policy statement sets out KAYA 959’s information gathering and dissemination practices in respect of the Website.

    3.2.6. If personal information is released with your consent KAYA 959 will retain a record of the information released, the third party to which it was released, the reason for the release and the date of release, for a period of 1 (one) year from the date on which it was last used.

    3.3. Note that, as permitted by the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002, KAYA 959 may use personal information collected to compile profiles for statistical purposes.
