Football fans will no longer be able to buy alcohol around World Cup stadiums in Qatar.
Sky News correspondent Rob Harrison reports:
“Fans will still be able to get drinks at hotel bars. But it will be at stadiums that fans won’t be able to buy a drink.
“There had been a decision for alcohol to be sold at a parameter of the stadium and for limited periods. “
This very late decision comes as a shock and means tha FIFA World Cup sponsor Budweiser won’t have their products sold around the stadium.
“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations, and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” read a statement from FIFA.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions on social media. Here’s what some fans are saying:
Alcohol isn’t everything, but to international fans at a football tournament it’s a major part of the experience.

Qatar banning alcohol 2 days before kick off, after previously assuring it would be available, once people have already paid for travel/tickets, is a total disgrace.
Qatar deciding three days before the World Cup that they won’t be serving alcohol just proves what a PR disaster we’re witnessing, surely this would’ve been clear a long time ago.
