Another dam wall collapses; this time in the North West.
Wall of Paardekraal Dam collapses as a result of North West’s strong rains
Due to the region’s high rainfall, the Paardekraal Dam wall outside of Rustenburg, North West, has collapsed.
The neighbourhoods of Paardekraal, Sunrise Park, Popo Molefe, and Boitekong have issued warnings to residents and drivers not to cross any bridges because they are already underwater.
The Rustenburg Local Municipality has sent a disaster management team to the region.

Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke with Caren Bosman to give clarity on what is happening in Rustenburg, and who is responsible for the maintenance of the dam.

“It’s actually interesting that this happened this week, literary last week Tuesday, the Department of Water and Sanitation made a presentation to the parliamentary committee on the safety of dams in South Africa.
“This is where they indicated that of the over 500 dams in South Africa that very few comply with dam safety regulations in South Africa.”
“Municipalities who are responsible for these dams don’t budget for it, of all the municipalities in the country only 10% comply with the safety regulations of these dams.” says Bosman.
