A Malawian TikToker who wanted to make a social media statement by burning her degree for clout, learned the hard way not to do things just for likes.
Bridget Thapwile Soko, an unemployed graduate, posted her TikTok rant questioning what’s the point in obtaining a degree if you’re still going to be without a job?
With hopes of securing a corporate job rapidly fading, Bridget set her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration alight, saying it’s of no use to her.
“What’s the point of this piece of paper if I’m still unemployed? I thought I would get a decent corporate job but Malawi said, no.”
Bridget Thapwile Soko set her Bachelor degree alight
As reported by Face of Malawi, the degree was obtained in 2018 and Bridget has been unemployed since then.
Bridget may have hoped her actions would have garnered her online support in an attempt to stage a mass protest against the unemployment situation in Malawi, but this was not the case.
Instead, her video reached the university she obtained the qualification from and Bridget’s degree has since been revoked.
Yes, revoked.
So, not only is Bridget still unemployed but she is no longer a BBA graduate.
Exploits University said the decision to revoke Bridget’s qualification was due to her blatantly tarnishing and disgracing the image of the university.
In a letter, university expressed its disappointment that Bridget chose to burn a degree that was awarded to her upon completion.
“We have learnt with disappointment that you recorded a video clip burning a degree that we awarded you upon completion of your studies with Exploits University and posted it on social media.
It is our interpretation that you did this to disgrace and tarnish the image of the University. The University is therefore revoking the degree of business administration awarded to you.
Consequently, you are no longer a graduate of Exploits University and as such your degree certificate is invalidated with immediate effect.”
