Colleen Makhubele, chair of chairs for the City of Johannesburg, was chosen as the new speaker of the city council on Wednesday afternoon.
The member of the Congress of the People (Cope) served the council for seven months in the roles of deputy speaker and chair of chairs.
On Wednesday, city council members met in Braamfontein’s council chambers to witness Makhubele’s formal election.

She defeated Democratic Alliance councilman Alex Christians by 141 votes.

Makhubele pledged allegiance to her responsibilities as council speaker.
She began her political career last year, and she rose swiftly to the top position.
The newly elected speaker will continue to have the support of the African National Congress, which expressed satisfaction with the outcomes.
